When choosing a pet to adopt sometimes there are signs pointing you in the direction of which pet to choose. I don’t think this is the case every time, but frequently there are signs that you just can’t ignore. And the name of the animal can be one of them.
Years ago I had a Cocker Spaniel named ‘Apple’. This was a few years before Gwyneth Paltrow named her daughter Apple so I guess I was a little ahead of the game. Apple came home to us on New Years Eve and immediately stole my heart. We were inseparable. She passed away a few years later and I have missed her ever since.
A few months after she passed my family and I road tripped across the country. On our travels my youngest son expressed the desire to get a dog, one that he could bond with. He had witnessed my experience with Apple and wanted a dog of his own.
The adventure begins
Following a bit of intuition, I checked out the nearest shelters. We were in Oklahoma, sitting in a Panera for wifi and lunch, and I found a shelter about 20 miles away. When I clicked on ‘Adoptable Dogs’ the first photo showed up. It was a small dog named Apple! We quickly packed up our stuff, jumped in the truck and drove straight to the shelter.
No-brainer ending, we adopted Apple II and renamed her Wafflez. She and my son bonded quickly and were inseparable.
Again, I believe pets pick you. If you pay attention, and follow the signs, the right pet will come into your life at the right time. For another example of this, read the blog post ‘It All Started With Francis’.
So stay open to a name popping out at you during your adoption search.
And thank you to the creative people at the shelters, many times I’ve seen a profile with a witty name and it warmed my heart!
